Responsibility

The primary responsibility of the Vice President of Product Management is to implement and direct all aspects of the Company’s product development strategy and implementation from the point of conception through the sales delivery and product utilization lifecycle.  This position is a senior level executive role that will interface with the engineering, finance, marketing and sales functions of the organization, and its executive sponsors. The product management role will be the driving mechanism to identify, assess and define product viability within a compelling strategic business framework by facilitating the delivery of high value solutions to the market.

The responsibilities of the Vice President of Product Management will include developing product and product enhancement opportunities through market research, working with customers and user groups, participating in field exercises and interacting with domain experts to achieve critical insights into the current and future priority needs of our customers. The role requires combining these findings with general requirements, specifications, timetables, pricing, penetration and profitability analysis, time to market, product positioning and competitive differentiation, and helping shape internal and external marketing strategies.

Strategy and Outcomes

The success of the Vice President of Product Management will be measured on a multi-factor, outcome-based approach. The key measures of performance will focus on:

  • Identifying high return on investment product development and enhancement and meeting sales and profit projections;
  • Delivering high value products and enhancements to the market working with engineering and manufacturing to ensure the timely development and introduction of high-quality products to market;
  • Anticipating competitive market developments and positioning the company as a first mover in key areas
  • Assist in driving market awareness and demand for our products in cooperation with marketing and sales.

Leadership and Reporting

The Vice President of Product Management will report to the President of the Company and will work closely with the Vice President of Engineering, the Senior Vice President of Sales, the Director of Marketing, Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Customer Service, Field Engineering and Director of Implementation, Training and Policy to coordinate and drive product development and delivery priorities to address sales and market needs.  The Vice President of Product Management will also be asked to periodically attend board of directors’ meetings and present strategic planning information and report upon progress with regard to material initiatives.

The Vice President of Product Management is expected to be a positive, motivating force, while imposing performance accountability in all critical areas to timely achieve objectives. The successful candidate will help create a culture focused upon product, innovation, quality and real-world value.

Functional Responsibilities

The Vice President of Product Development will be expected to develop an overall strategic framework and vision for advancing the company’s product portfolio for competitive market dominance. This position requires, among other functions:

  • Understanding customer and market vertical needs through research and market data
  • Developing product lines and appraise new ideas for market viability
  • Assessing competition by comparing products
  • Creating product marketing communications objectives
  • Working with the Senior Vice President of Sales director to create product sales strategies
  • Working with customers and sales to evaluate sales call results and customer feedback
  • Creating long- and short-term product sales forecasts and analysis for management
  • Reviewing inventory levels and production schedules for product availability
  • Bringing new products to market with return-on-investment analysis
  • Marketing new products with sales, advertising and production teams
  • Determining product pricing based on market research, production costs and anticipated demand
  • Working with the Vice President of Engineering, Vice President of Innovation and Chief Technology to set product priorities, define deliverables, establish delivery schedules and follow-up on interim and final delivery milestones
  • Evaluating the fidelity and quality of new products and enhancements to market driven specifications, and to course correct activities as necessary to ensure delivery of salable products to the market
  • Continuing professional and technical education, attending workshops, seminars, etc.
  • Preparing periodic assessments as to progress on established initiatives for senior management
  • Identifying organizational weaknesses and recommending changes and improvements

Technical Skills & Education

The Vice President of Product Management should have a strong technical background and in-depth product management experience leading a successful product organization or division within the field of telecommunications, networking and routing, wireless broadband, and IP voice and video.  Working experience with FirstNet, Verizon Public Safety Core, 4G LTE, PTT over cellular, MCPTT, LMR, P25, broadband satellite, IoT, and principles of cybersecurity are strongly preferred. A background having managed both software and hardware based technical products is a strong plus.

A bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering from a top tier university along with a record of having worked as an engineer during their career in relevant areas is necessary.  Post graduate degrees in relevant technical or business management are a plus.

The Vice President of Product Management will be expected to quickly acquire an excellent technical understanding of the Company’s software solution and hardware platforms, and should be capable of conversing with technical personnel at the system and subsystems level, including being conversant in network design, network and media protocols, operating systems, codecs, software programming languages, and client based  and native mobile applications. This should be complemented with a current knowledge of industry and technology trends as applied to the public safety and security space, and continual understanding of competitive developments.

Financial and Written Communication Skills

The Vice President of Product Management is not only a technical leadership position. It is a business leadership position that requires excellent business acumen and financial analysis skills. The Vice President of Product Management must be capable of performing general financial analysis and working with the CFO and other financial personnel in preparing forecasts, sales penetration modeling, cost of sales analysis, pricing and margin analysis and similar activities. He/she should also have strong written communication skills and will be expected to work in a variety of areas where the review and preparation of written materials is critical.

The Vice President of Product Management should be capable of working efficiently in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Experience

The Vice President of Product Management should have a demonstrable track record of success in leading product management efforts from conception to market delivery. Hands-on experience capturing and driving large projects to successful conclusion is critical. Other valued experience includes:

  • Successfully bringing new products to market
  • Working with senior management on developing major company product and market strategies
  • Working with engineers and other technical staff on product definition and specifications, to establish delivery schedules and mechanisms for market evaluation and acceptance
  • Working with customers, sales engineers and other technical staff to identify customer needs and market opportunities
  • Working with provisioning systems and field delivery

The Vice President of Product Management should be a strong communicator, keen observer, analytical and willing to challenge the status quo. This vision must be accomplished through cooperative leadership, but without compromising core principles necessary to achieving outcomes.
